TUCSON, AZ — The electronic cigarette industry has again been vaulted into the national spotlight. But this time it is not an intellectual struggle or debate. This time it is a tragedy.
When electronic cigarette company Green Nicotine’s owner, Sean Schoepflin, heard of the recent failure of the industry involving Mr. Holloway and his e-cigarette, he released the following statement.
“My heart goes out to Mr. Holloway. Here is a man that clearly wanted to improve his life and the lives of those he loves. His e-cigarette was not a novelty item, which is evident by the presence of multiple batteries in his study. He had probably tried dozens of other products to help him get off of traditional tobacco and settled on an alternative that looks, tastes and feels like the real thing. He was betrayed by the very product that he hoped would improve his quality of life.
“The electronic cigarette industry has the chance to change the world but it is riddled with products that are clearly made of inferior components and overwhelmed by companies whose only concern is turning a quick profit. The true issue lies at the heart of what is both accepted and encouraged in this industry: putting profits before a moral responsibility to help people. It truly disappoints me that an industry with such awesome potential to change the world has failed and that Mr. Holloway has fallen victim to such blatant betrayal.
“Clearly, our industry lays the ground work for global change. Over 2.5 million smokers have already begun improving their lives by using e-cigarettes as an alternative. But this progress is quickly being destroyed. Corners cannot be cut when it comes to research, development or quality control. This means the cost of running an electronic cigarette company will rise, but this is a product that is consumed, not a pair of sunglasses. Our customers trust that we are providing the industry’s highest quality product. There is absolutely no excuse for poor quality components.
“This kind of shoddy craftsmanship must end now. From quality control to sales practices, there must be self-regulation before there is no longer an e-cig industry. Electronic cigarette companies must stop acting unethically and irresponsibly. How long will it be before a child gets a hold of a bottle of ‘e-juice’ and is rushed to the hospital because of it? Or before our high schools become overrun by new smokers who have been introduced to nicotine because of flavors like strawberry banana or coconut? How long until cheap components cause more harm than good?
“The electronic cigarette industry has a tremendous amount of power. But right now, that power is being used to increase profit margins
, not change lives. This industry has had the chance to self-regulate and has failed miserably. Legitimate e-cigarette companies should be begging for outside regulation that protects our consumers. We should be banding together and seeking legal methods to enact real change to ensure that the lessons of Mr. Holloway’s tragedy are not forgotten.
“As for those E-Cigarette companies who put profits before their moral obligation to people: If your thought process does not immediately change direction, rest assured your increasing bank accounts and fantastic profit margins will eventually evaporate. You will drive this industry into extinction. Deceptive marketing practices and shortcuts in research and development
will destroy all of the possibilities that lay before us. This industry needs individuals with the highest integrity and corporations with an unshakeable conviction to improve our world.”

TUCSON, AZ — Amidst a flurry of scrutiny about the electronic cigarette industry, Green Nicotine once again finds itself standing out from all other electronic cigarette companies.
Recent attacks on the electronic cigarette industry stem from concern that minors are finding it easy to get their hands on e-cigs. Ease of access, coupled with enticing flavors, has made it increasingly convenient for minors to gain access to electronic cigarettes. As government agencies become more involved in monitoring electronic cigarette companies to prevent the targeting of minors, Green Nicotine has set the standard for ethical self-regulation.
“I cannot speak for other electronic cigarette companies, but I can tell you that Green Nicotine has made it a mission to prevent minors from getting ahold of our electronic cigarettes. We aren’t worried about further regulation that would restrict e-cigarette use by minors. In fact, we welcome and encourage it. Not only have we employed a mandatory identification check at our physical locations, enforced through secret shoppers and surveillance, but we also require an adult signature for each new customer that orders through our website,” said Sean Schoepflin, owner and CEO of Green Nicotine. “Our intent is to improve the lives of current smokers, not to convert non-smokers to our product.”
Green Nicotine’s commitment to reducing access of electronic cigarettes to minors goes beyond the Age Verification Policy. While many e-cigarette brands have added fruit or candy flavors to their product lines, Green Nicotine has maintained its strong stance of only offering traditional tobacco flavors.
“A real smoker doesn’t want a strawberry flavored substitute. Smokers want a product that tastes like the real thing. Any e-cig company, including Green Nicotine, has the technology to produce flavors that appeal to everyone. We have specifically chosen not to do that. Fruit flavors do nothing but promote the recruitment of non-smokers and minors,” said Schoepflin.
Since its inception, Green Nicotine has sought to improve the lives of smokers by reducing the intake of harmful chemicals and carcinogens that are associated with traditional tobacco. The goal of Green Nicotine is a smoke-free environment that will be more beneficial for all people, especially those suffering from exposure to second and third hand smoke.
“Our purpose is to help our customers satisfy or reduce their nicotine intake while also eliminating harmful chemicals. My ideal world would be one in which Green Nicotine is no longer necessary and we have to close our doors because all of our customers no longer need our product. It isn’t about turning a profit for me. It’s about improving lives that have been damaged by traditional tobacco use.”
Once again, it is the mission and vision of Green Nicotine that is not only central to the company, but is also defining the industry.

400,000 deaths in the United States are attributed to traditional tobacco usage each year. This staggering number is greater than most of the top ten causes of death combined. One would think an individual would see a statistic like this and throw their pack of cigarettes away. As a former smoker, I can tell you it’s not that easy. Aside from the nicotine, we have developed patterns of behaviors that make the addiction so much harder to break. From the tearing of the cellaphane, to the feel of our cigarette, to holding it in our mouth, to watching the smoke escape into the atmosphere…the entire process has become part of our addiction. Breaking such an expierience would bring a whirlwind of stress to our lives. Furthermore, we feel bullet proof and every statistic doesn’t seem to get our attention. Maybe this one will: Every year 600,000 innocent people die worldwide from second hand smoke!
That’s right. Within 10 years, 6 million people who do not smoke will perish from second hand smoke. We may not care of the risk we put ourselves at, but it seems a little selfish to overlook the harm we cause others. Smoking bans are going into affect everywhere and with good reason. Lawmakers are hearing the crys from the non-smoking public. This non-smoking public is digesting all the studies and doing something about it. Studies on second hand smoke are just as alarming as first hand smoke. New studies on third hand smoke are equally alarming.
As a smoking parent, we go outside our home or exit the car before smoking around our little one. We do not want to expose our children to second hand smoke. We understand the dangers and our love for our children makes us do the right thing. However, studies are coming in showing that this behavior is not enough. There is a little secret called third hand smoke. Third hand smoke is the smoke on your clothes. Meaning: you take a smoke break, you get smoke embedded in your clothes, and now everyone is smoking with you when they smell that smoke on your clothes. Third hand smoke is proving to be just as bad as first and second hand smoke. As an ex-smoking parent this was a alarming fact for me. I was unknowingly exposing my child to this countries #1 cause of death.
As smokers, we may not worry about the harm we cause ourselves. Inhaling 4,000 chemicals, 50 carcinogens, building up of tar, and the robbing our blood of oxygen seems to be a small deterent for the pleasures of smoking. Substance like arsenic, formaldehyde, and benzine have been willingly added to our diet. However, lack of our own well being can not get in the way of our responsibility to those around us. From our innocent children to the non-smoking strangers we sit next to every day, we must be sensitive to their right to live a smoke free lifestyle. If we can not find the will to quit, we must respect the children and the non smoking public around us. After all, they are making the right choice and so should we…before it’s too late.
